1) The 1972 Summit Series - Let's Take A Break
The September to Remember
Almost any Canadian who is old enough can tell you exactly what he or she was doing on September 28, 1972, when Paul Henderson scored the 6-5 goal at 19:26 of the final period, Game 8 of the Canada-Russia Series. For a moment, our world stood still, and then as the red light flickered behind Vladislav Tretiak, our hearts filled with joy, and relief.
It was 38 years ago this month, I was living and working in Brandon, Manitoba. I looked out my office window, and nothing was moving. No foot traffic on the main street; no cars moved, although several were parked on the street, engines running, their occupants listening to the car radios. In the corner of my office, a borrowed TV flickered and my staff of 3 had their eyes glued to the screen. No one spoke; no one moved.
If the teams, who were playing in Russia were to tie the game, according to the rules, Canada would lose the series. And with just 34 seconds left in the final game, with the game tied at 5 to 5, Canada had to win against the Russians. We had to win. Everything was on the line.
A tear still comes to my eye when I watch either the Foster Hewett television broadcast or listen to Bob Cole's radio report. Why don't you watch and listen too?
